Red light therapy has been used in humans for decades to treat a myriad of problems with little-known side effects, so it is no wonder this type of treatment has now migrated on to help our pets. The red, or near-infrared lights are targeted at the problem area, and because they increase blood flow to that area it can make your pet feel warm and relaxed. You do not have to worry about scalding your pet as no heat is produced from the LED device, the warmth is just created from your animal's body.
Pets usually tolerate the therapy very well as it is non-invasive, non-painful and drug-free, and the devices come in the form of different-sized flexible wraps that can be easily applied to legs and paws or can be worn as a coat. The devices are easy to apply and can be used in the comfort of your own home, making this type of therapy far less stressful for you and your pet than all those visits to the vet!
How Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Also known as low-level laser therapy, the red and near-infrared lights penetrate the skin and stimulate the cells to produce energy. Mitochondria (also known as the powerhouses of cells) become activated with red light therapy and this stimulates the production of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP - the energy currency of the cell - stores and transports energy and basically powers various essential biological processes in the body.
This form of photobiomodulation increases energy and blood flow to the targeted area and allows cells to repair and regenerate themselves more efficiently. These activated cells can help reduce pain and inflammation and improve circulation to the area, helping the tissues to heal more quickly and improving the overall function of the cells.
What Can Red Light Therapy Be Used For?
Red light therapy is a popular treatment for the rehabilitation of pets and is frequently used to help alleviate pain and inflammation, treat skin conditions and improve wound care.
Chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis can be hard for owners and their pets, as nobody likes to see an animal in pain, or struggling to get around. There are many anti-inflammatory medications available to ease the symptoms, but these also have side effects. Red light therapy can work in combination with these medications or help reduce the need for certain ones.
It is also extremely useful to help pets heal and recover from injuries, wounds and surgeries as the increase in cellular function helps to reduce inflammation and pain, whilst increasing muscle recovery. Red light therapy also increases collagen production, which improves wound healing, skin tone and texture, and reduces scarring.
Red light therapy has little known side effects, and while it is always advisable to consult with your vet before you begin any new treatment or therapy, this type of alternative therapy can boost your pet's energy levels and have a positive impact on their overall quality of life.
